Now, here's the backstory on Barb:
- Hometown: Bloomington, Minnesota.
- Parents: Mom is still going strong, now working part-time in my sister's law firm. She and Dad joined the Peace Corps when they were 60 years old and served in the Solomon Islands for two years (and missed my wedding!). My dad was a local elected official and worked for the same company as a senior manager for more than 25 years. He passed away in 1997.
- Favorite TV show as a kid: Hogan's Heroes
- Spent my days as a youth: I ran the neighborhood! I was into everything, including school and local civic theater, cheerleading, yearbook and fun, fun, fun with my friends.
- Hobbies: Food (everything about it—eating, cooking, shopping, reading), traveling, photography, scrapbooking and yoga.
- First paycheck job: Bloomington Drug. I worked the front cashier, restocked items and sometimes got to help the pharmacist.
- First car: A Volkswagen Rabbit, brown, two-door, stick shift. I have no idea what the model year was, but in 1984 it was already an old car. I loved that car and traveled all over the U.S. in it!
- First job after college: I went to grad school. My first full-time "real" job was as an administrative assistant for the American Hellenic Alliance, a nonprofit Greek-American organization in D.C. It was fun, and it landed me a job in Athens, Greece!
- Thing you would most likely learn about me in the first five minutes of conversation: I talk with my hands and have a lot of energy. Oh—and I don't have a Minnesota accent!
- Perfect happiness is: Going on an outing, trip, or any activity with my son and husband. If the dog can come, too, then it is complete.
- If I had to do it all over again: I would not change anything!
Other, less "traditional" experience includes:
- A competitive ice skater and former member of the United States Figure Skating Association
- A cow-milking contest winner
- An Irish castle owner
- A former competitive gymnast
- A child actress
- A former yak herder
- An avid kickboxer
